Kristo is the solo project of Belgian artist Kristiaan Deruytter. Driven by musical craftsmanship and a distinct artistic vision, he weaves together funk, soul, and R&B with a deep love for classic songwriting. With echoes of Prince and D’Angelo, the creative flair of David Bowie, and contemporary influences like Dijon and Jordan Rakei, his music sounds both timeless and fresh.
Growing up with a mother who taught percussion and a father—saxophonist Frank Deruytter—music was a constant presence in his home. From experimenting in school bands to playing in his father’s funk big band, OTO Machine, he discovered the power of groove and ensemble playing at an early age, while developing a profound respect for the art of songwriting.
His debut album, Eternal Love, is set for release on December 1, 2026. While his influences are audible, his songs chart their own course. Kristo wrote or co-wrote all sixteen tracks, co-produced the album, and performed almost all the instrumentation and vocals himself. Boris Van Overschee (Delv!s, Portland, Eefje de Visser) handled the recording, production, and mixing.
Live, Kristo delivers a tight, dynamic sound that leaves room for spontaneity and improvisation. He is joined on stage by Wout Helsen (drums), Erik Rademakers (bass), and Daan Demeyer (keys). He has performed at festivals such as Gent Jazz and the North Sea Jazz Festival (Talent Stage) and has opened for acts like Macy Gray and Theo Croker.
Humo: “‘Spinning Around’ showcases international appeal, with a sophisticated funk-pop sound reminiscent of Rhye, Benny Sings, and Tom Misch. One to watch!”
